Midhurst Restaurant

Client:   Private
Location:  Midhurst, West Sussex

This decaying, listed 17th century cottage, which had been extended several times and adapted as a shop, was restored and converted in to a restaurant and 2 apartments.  Investigation provided historic understanding and identified features for repair and preservation, including long hidden ones.  An oak-fronted extension replaced a poor  quality modern one.  Independent residential access and improved layouts were designed and harmonious new elements complemented historic ones.   Close liaison with local authority officers was maintained throughout.

During reconstruction, it became apparent that the cement render could be removed to reveal the original stone and brick façade.  With extensive repair and period joinery, the result exceeded expectations.  Late in the contract, we designed and fast-tracked the restaurant interiors for the new operator.  The project was greatly helped by an excellent client-contractor-architect relationship.  Project Architect: Alina Wisnicka
